Tatsuo Suzuki: We Are Creatures of Emotion

WHAT MAKES BLACK AND WHITE PHOTOGRAPHY SO IMPORTANT TO YOU?

It is extremely emotional, impulsive, powerful, impatient, destructive–more so than color images. So I choose Black & White, because I’d like to express in my shots, emotional energy and beauty in the streets. Colour has too much going on for me, Black & White, with just two tones fits better for me. For stronger shots with more emotion, black and white processing is more appropriate, I think.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO CREATE PHOTOGRAPHS?

My passion to express my own emotion and people in the city’s beauty: friction, fever, etc. I love shooting the streets, it’s all just so fascinating to me; it’s a huge stage and studio. I am always looking for decisive moments on the street, my aim is to show how the world is beautiful, interesting, wonderful and sometimes cruel. By means of photography and through my own eyes with my gear. I am so happy and glad when someone feels some emotion when they see my images.

WHY IS BLACK AND WHITE PHOTOGRAPHY SO IMPORTANT TO OUR FUTURE IN THE ART WORLD?

So the biggest reason, passionate shots are strong, we will need our world’s emotion in the future. It’s [black and white photography] more aggressive than color. We are creatures of emotion, and therefore, black and white is the most appropriate to express our feelings, I think that it is really necessary in our future in the art world.
